This
website was created as a place to put my photographic work.
I'm from the USA and now live in Reykjavik, Iceland where
I work as a graphic artist and interface designer at a software
firm. Examples of my graphic work can be seen on my
other website.
My
formal training is in fine arts and I graduated from Eastern
Kentucky University and from the University of California,
Berkeley. After spending a few years in San Francisco, I headed
to Iceland, where I've lived since 1988.
Lavatop
started with a group of pictures from 1999 that I call A
Few Sensual Moments. They were done with a video camera
and I originally printed them on art paper with archival inks.
I was intrigued by the idea of getting a handmade look using
digital technology. I had originally planned to explore the
concept of erotica from a woman's perspective since there
seem to be so few women creating it, but in the meantime found
so much sensuality around me that I created a section of the
web called Lavatop Sensual
and left it at that. In the spirit of the web, here is a reciprocal
link to the fine art page of the Erotica
Index. If you know of any interesting woman-made erotica,
please send me the link!
Lavatop
Multicultural is based on an idea I've had more or less
since I came to Iceland. I was amazed at the number of people
I was meeting from so many diverse cultures. This is a country
of 280,000 people, and my daughter goes to a school with kids
of 80 different nationalites. My basic idea is this: if you
live in Iceland and you came from somewhere else, you are
a candidate for the Multicultural section of the Lavatop.
I may extend the rules to include visitors to the country,
not that I'm short of material or anything, it's just that
it could be fun. I bent the rules once already to include
an Icelander who has lived in many different countries.
The
Lavatop Journal contains
what I would call a collection of snapshots rather than finished
artworks. I had so many things I wanted to share with friends
and acquaintances, I thought I would just create a section
here to share with everybody. You might find local cultural
events or a pretty sunrise in this section.
You
might be wondering why I chose the name Lavatop. It's just
a way of referring to Iceland (an island with volcanic activity),
since my photographic work is based on and inspired so much
by my surroundings. I wanted to come up with a real name,
instead of just calling the web something like "Iceland
Art Photo". I found out later that lavatop actually refers
to a type of topsoil.
If
you would be interested in posing for a photo session, let
me know! I'll try to make something artistic from the experience.
